i must admit back around 2000 when this song first came out, before i was a dj i used to bartend at a restaurant in chelsea called ‘east of eighth’.  it’s still there but i haven’t worked there in about eight years.  well, i guess i started really djing then because i used to either get up extra early on saturday mornings (or i just hadn’t gone to bed because i got home from dancing about an hour or two earlier icon wink chauncey treat : rewind ) just to burn a cd or four of fresh music to play while i bartended.  people really used to come in specifically for the music eventually because as much as i loved the gayest and the darkest dance remix at the time i also have always had a penchant for creating the perfect saturday brunch and lunchtime soundtracks.  a former coworker used to call it ‘martyr’ music and that always makes me giggle when i think about it.  sarah mclachlan, tori, paula cole, sinead, jeff buckley, ephraim lewis and all those other emotionally charged singer songwriters used to fill the patrons ears and my and my manager and best friend adham’s as well.  there may or may not have been something filling our noses as well but that’s a whole other blog post hehe.  this song by kosheen came out during my early years of internet scouring for new music and finding the quickest and most private file sharing programs to snatch as much free music as i possibly could.  i do remember being one of the first people in my circle and most other circles to have discovered this piece of audio brilliance.  it was the perfect song to represent your style.  people with completely different tastes in music but with open minds all found something within the song to diddle their aural fixations.

although most of my homosexual peers, acquaintances and enemies only discovered this song in its house remix incarnation coupled with the confusion of the awkwardrelease of shitty, talentless cover artist suzanne palmer’s version courtesy of peter rauhofer’s club 69 collective.  enjoy the original drum and bass version that always makes me smile and think of a wonderful time in my life that i can’t believe was a decade ago already!

here’s the video featuring the dance mix that magically transports me back inside the walls of limelight…or avalon if you will…
