we recently asked mykel eleven questions about his artistic endeavors, future projects and more.  he is certainly the proverbial jack of all trades whose wardrobe consists of performing artist, singer, songwriter and most recently the ceo of eec! productions.  we caught him in-between two major landmark events this fall.  just two weeks ago, he performed songs and read excerpts from his upcoming memoirs about his many, many roomates while living in new york city at a benefit for non-profit organization called s.w.i.s.h.  on december 2nd, he will host a networking event at madame x on the lower east side which will serve as a kickoff for his brand new production company called eec! productions.

-What is the event “Kashmir NIrvana”  all about?

The Event on December 2nd, 2010 is an evening to bring together other artists, creatives, entrepreneurs together for an evening of networking, information gathering and sharing.  I will be singing at the beginning of the night to warm up the evening.

- What is the creative inspiration for and how did you come up with the name for your event

“Mykel’s Kashmir Nirvana”?  Mykel’s Kashmir Nirvana the name came to be a couple of years ago when I was trying to decide on a name for a rock/blues evening I had put together with a band.  The name hence, has stuck and is serving a useful purpose for other events.

-You have been singing, performing and much more for many years, when and why did you decide to incorporate networking and community involvement into the mix?

I need to find stability inside being an artist if I am to continue a career in entertainment.  Incorporating new ideas/projects, like networking and community involvement, which tie entertainment into them is great fit for longevity.

-Name three singer/songwriters or performers you would compare yourself to if you had to:

I would compare myself to Sarah Brightman because we both have tackled musical theater starting out, and though I am not famous like her, we both fuse our singing strengths that bind different genres of music together.   Allison Moyet for similar reasons, she has recorded dance music, the music she does write is similar to my style and she too has tackled theater.   Vocally I have been compared to Steve Perry and Adam Lambert.

-What is the hardest part about performing your work in front of an audience?

The hardest part is wondering if the audience will like what I have to sing (my original works), or my interpretation of another song I decide to cover or the performance of a dance track.

-What feeling do you want people to leave with after attending your shows or events?

I want people to leave with having had an amazing experience, a sense of enlightenment or a message to take into the world.

-What’s next for Mykel?

Reinventing, reviving and restructuring more of what I am already doing as an artist.

-You are more than just a singer and performer, what other avenues of creativity do you explore?

I like to sew flags, I love to draw my thoughts, songwriting is something I am good at too creatively.   I find I am creating artwork on my face thus getting good at being a make up artist as well!

-Which of your artistic endeavors helps exorcise your demons best?

My songwriting mos def. Writing gets to that underlying itch I have to scratch, it really gets it out of me.

-Where do you see yourself and your art in eleven years?

In eleven years I see myself making a solid living on just entertainment with performing, writing, producing.  My artistry will only be more mature, well seasoned and well received by my audiences.

-Can you give a piece of advice to new performers or musicians who are about to unleash their work to the world?

Know when you just want to express yourself and know when you have to focus on your game to make it in this business. It’s called show business not show fun!
